Just wanted to share with you this cutie! I photographed this little guy first during a newborn session his family had here in my Durham region studio. He is just as cute now as he was at only about a week old. Mama wanted something simple but woodsy and I always come from a place of photography that is quite minimal in that I believe the baby should always be the focus. She was on board and now we have these lovely photos of her little one that really shows him, his features and his adorable personality. It's important during a photo session especially when working with babies around a year that you have their attention. Props, stuff, balloons are all super cute but sometimes to much can keep them from looking at you and instead wanting to play with the background. Which by the way is totally understandable and should be expected at just a year old? We all know this I know :) Just saying guys, if we keep things simple we will get all those beautiful shots focused on the most adorable and cutest part of this whole cake smash thing. That of course is the tiny human covered in all the cake.
What kind of cake works best for my cake smash session ?
Onto the main focus here on my mind daily. Cake. I keep a fork in my purse incase it happens. Kidding. Or am I ? What cake should I get for my cake smash. Again, I'm all about simplicity. Please don't spend an arm and leg on a cake that will be smashed to bits. The little cake topers are great and can be taken off in a pinch but figures and details just have a baby eating a glob of fondant. Mom keeps having to fish out the big pieces so baby doesn't choke of course and baby doesn't care about the cake anymore because there are now edible toys on top. These little tips and details will just help get you more photos and reactions from baby and also keep his focus on the camera. Cakes that are made with dark icing are not ideal. I kid you not when, cake smash with a little boy who's cake was Cookie Monster blue had baby looking like a full on smurf. The dye was so heavy that it really make things a big mess for the baby and for everything else that blue touches. Try for a while or muted blue. Choose any colour, just think pastel colours. Less dye for baby too....Which is a big plus!
So what kind of cake should you look for ?
Light icing , white or pastel colour
small round cake is best
textures to the icing look great
vanilla is best
toppers welcome - avoid figures instead a word works best
