Durham region Barn Wedding at South Pond Farms
There are some really great options for couples when looking to book a venue for there wedding. A place that offers a feeling and a style that speaks to them. I have shot at beach shores, dwellings in the woods, art galleries and some really cool century museums. From Chic restaurants to industrial spaces, in the current wedding industry there are so many options for couples and creative ways to host a beautiful wedding day.
Having seen a variety of venues I can say for sure, I especially love farm weddings. Weathered wood, sunset fields and fresh seasonal flavours. I think life is really beautiful when you take advantage of the simple things and slow down a bit. Take a few moments and be present. It's a beautiful thing to look around in all directions and see nothing but rolling hills, trees and green. A place where there are no buildings and no highways to be seen from anywhere. To stop the pace and be present in what this wedding day means. When you bring people out into open air and away from the traffic and noise there focus can shift. Our multitasking minds can slow down and soften to really let loose and enjoy the celebration and this is espacially true for the bride and groom themselves. It's so much work planning a wedding and organizing the details that when it's time to party, this is the place to do it! Farm weddings have lots to offer. A simple ceremony surrounded by nature, family & friends, it’s always a good party. Barn weddings are such a perfect backdrop for a great celebration, a little quiet romance and stunning wedding photography.
Lindsay and Jordan were married at South pond farms, a beautiful wedding venue in Durham region. Found in the small town of Pontypool Ontario, It's a beautiful place to host a wedding. I have heard many couples rave about South Pond Farms and how lovely it is only to find out it’s booked on there date. It truly is a gem of a place and being able to shoot at this venue has left me eager to visit again! The food was amazing too! Seasonal and vibrant, it was really delicious! It was such a positive experience. L&J, you made such a great choice. I remember seeing so many of your guests taking in the open space and enjoying such a laid back and fun Wedding.
It doesn’t hurt either when your fall wedding day happens to be one of the most warm and beautiful days in September. This is a great month to get married, it’s normally not too hot, beautiful colours and bright sunny days make outdoor barn wedding rock this time of year.
The bridal party got ready in a cute little cottage on the grounds of the venue. It was roomy, great light and convenient for everything. Hair & makeup took care of everything right there on site and the wedding flowers were designed and supplied by the owner of South pond Farms, Danielle French. She did a lovely job. The bridal party had a great laid back attitude and I captured lots of candid laughs. The Groomsmen arrived at the venue early for some groomsmen shots and this really made it easy for me to cover lots of the day for the couple. By having me at just one location there was no travel and therefor more photos! I'm always open to travel for cleints when it's needed but this wedding was planned beautifully and things went so smooth and effortless, it was a great opportunity!
Getting ready on site, ceremony outside, beautiful backdrop for endless wedding photography plus a really great party! Not a bad workday. The only thing better then being a wedding photographer is being at a wedding as a guest. I rarely get to go to weddings, I'm usually the photographer but I’d be lying if I said I don’t sing the words to every song on that DJ’s playlist (excluding any country from 1997 and up) and I like Bob Seger and I offer no feelings of shame admitting this. I'm a 90's kid at heart who will never get sick of hearing classic wedding songs from the 80's. Regardless if your wedding is a chic bohemian style-fest to go down in Instagram history or a simple backyard party in the middle of a field. What these gatherings all have in common is celebrating love and happiness and relationships. It's the most important connections we will ever have as humans and it's a beautiful thing so worth being documented. It’s all of the above plus the Macarena.
Lets talk lighting for a minute. The best time to take photos is in the evening. Most challenging time to take photos is in the mid afternoon. When the sun is right above us. Often the timelines of weddings depend upon the ceremony. Availability of the church or efficient, venue's catering and dinner guidelines all must be considered when planning. If I could offer bride & grooms any advice when thinking about wedding photography and lighting, it is to have your photos begin after 3:30 if at all possible. The later into the evening the better especially with the long summer days. The length of days and time will be a big difference to consider especially for a May wedding vs. an October wedding. It may seem obvious but I know with so much planning on a couples plate this little detail can easily become overlooked. The most magical light happens an hour before sunset. Taking a quick 5 minutes to sneak away during this time just bride & groom is a great way to take a breather and snap a couple sunset shots for a little extra icing on this wedding cake!
Anytime I work with wedding parties I always try to evoke more natural and candid photography. I'm personally not a huge fan of overly posed shots but there is always a time when a few are needed. Offering the right balance of direction is key. A large wedding party like this will need some guidance for sure, but taking a laid back approach to it helps keep things simple and fun! My top priority when searching spaces is to create the best situation for lighting possible. If you have great light you can always make a beautiful photograph.
